This section describes how to select from the various information presentation methods displayed by the supporting tool. The information presentation method can be freely selected depending on the user and system requirements. There are many considerations to accomplish this, but here we investigated the following elements:

  • Ease of understanding the work for the system user
  • Ease of implementation for the system developer
  • Sense of unification (consistency) in the information presentation methods for the entire task

“Ease of understanding the work for the system user” and “Ease of implementation for the system developer”

We designed and developed various AR systems while creating this site. In doing so, we observed that in different subtasks, despite an “information presentation method using images and video” being relatively simpler to implement, it was easier to understand than the “information presentation method using 3D model and animation,” which was relatively difficult to implement. Accordingly, the results of the information presentation method selection tool were displayed in the “order of ease of implementation;” we recommend using upper part of the list as they are easier to implement and should be considered when using the tool.

However, these include subtasks—as shown in the items of “recommended display”—are difficult to understand and need support. In such cases, it is better to select the type of “information presentation method using 3D model and animation” that enables higher level of visual assistance than the options displayed in the lower part of the list.

Recommended display function

“Recommended display function” was provided as a support function for selection. This is a function to assign a “recommendation level” to each of the displayed information presentation methods by selecting (check box) the relevant subtask elements. You may select based on the recommendation level.

“Sense of unification in information presentation methods for the entire task”

Moreover, for each subtask, if the information presentation method type is different, it may need abrupt changes in the user’s attention, which may pose several problems. The burden on the user can be prevented by making consistency on the types of information presentation method as much as possible.

(Example: If many of the subtasks utilize an information presentation method that uses the fixed display (position) in the field of view, then it is better to unify the method of using fixed display in the field of view of all the other subtasks, excluding those that have methods selected for specific purposes because of reasons such as difficulty in understanding the work.)

Example: The list of information presentation methods is displayed when the object placement subtask is used (placement method description is necessary), while 3D position and posture is needed for the user tracking and two types of object tracking.

Normally, in this guideline, the “Display of image or video showing placement location and procedure, at a fixed position in field of view [6]” and “Display of translucent video showing placement location and procedure, in the field of view [7]” are recommended.

However, when elements such as “there are many locations similar to the designated one in the surrounding area, and it is difficult to discern” are included in the subtask, implementation based on the displayed recommendations may be difficult. In such cases, it is better to select either the “Display of 3D models or 3D CG animations showing placement location and procedure superimposed on designated location [10]” or “Display of 3D CG animations showing the procedure from the current state to the target state superimposed on each object and designated location [11]” options from the lower part of the list.

Moreover, if for the previous subtask, the display location of the image or video is close to the target object or work location, selecting the “Display of image or video showing placement location and procedure near the location of work [9]” option will enhance the unification of information presentation methods in the task.
